An illustration project based on Edmond Moore Hamilton's novel 'City At World's End'.
When a sleepy American town is shunted through time to the far future, the citizens find Earth freezing to death. They are forced to take shelter in a wondrous but deserted glass-domed city.
Kenniston and Hubble explore a chain of corridors and catacombs beneath the dead city. They discover a vast excavated chamber, containing "a great circular shaft" that drops into nothingness - the Abyssal Pit!
"I know it sounds impossible to our engineering experience,” Hubble said, looking into the pit, “but I believe this shaft goes downward many, many miles. I believe it goes down into Earth's core"
